Not only can chronic stress increase a person's risk for many diseases, including stroke and heart disease as well as other stress-related illnesses, but it can also accelerate aging.

How stress causes faster aging is not clear. There are some clues to the stress-aging connection provided by studies on telomeres – the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes.
